  • al fayoum, al fayoum

Conveniently located a short distance from Cairo, you’ll spend thenext 2 days exploring the Fayoum region.

Al Fayoum offers a peaceful escape into Egypt’s countryside—where ancient traditions, lush farmlands, and desert landscapes blend into one. This natural oasis is dotted with palm groves, waterfalls, and archaeological treasures, making it a favourite for nature lovers

The following included places and activities you can expect to see:

    1. Hawara Pyramid

    • Location: South of the Fayoum Oasis.

    • Historical Significance: Built by Pharaoh Amenemhat III during the 12th Dynasty (Middle Kingdom), the Pyramid of Hawara is known as the "Black Pyramid." It once had an elaborate labyrinth underneath, described by ancient historians like Herodotus.

    • Exploration: Though much of the pyramid's exterior has eroded over time, it remains an interesting site for those keen on ancient Egyptian architecture and history.

    2. Lahun Pyramid (El-Lahun Pyramid)

    • Location: Close to the village of Lahun, near Fayoum.

    • Historical Significance: This pyramid was built by Pharaoh Senusret II (12th Dynasty) and is unique for being made of mudbrick rather than stone. It also features a distinctive, narrow entrance, which is unusual in pyramid design.

    • Highlights: Surrounding the pyramid are tombs of workers and nobles, offering insights into the lives of those who helped build the structure.

    3. Meidum Pyramid

    • Location: About 100 kilometers south of Cairo, near Fayoum.

    • Historical Significance: Thought to be one of the earliest attempts at a smooth-sided pyramid, the Meidum Pyramid was built for Pharaoh Huni and later modified by his successor, Sneferu. However, much of it collapsed during construction, leaving its distinctive "stepped" appearance.

    • Exploration: Visitors can explore the pyramid’s remains and the surrounding mastaba tombs, which showcase early pyramid-building techniques.

    4. Qarun Lake

    • Location: Northwest of Fayoum.

    • Significance: Qarun Lake (Birket Qarun) is one of Egypt’s largest natural lakes and a remnant of the ancient Lake Moeris. It is a saltwater lake that’s popular for birdwatching, especially migratory birds like flamingos and herons.

    • Activities: Visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, or simply relaxing by the lake. There are also nearby archaeological sites, such as the Roman ruins at Dimeh al-Siba.

    5. Tunis Village & Pottery School

    • Location: Near Qarun Lake.

    • Cultural Significance: Tunis Village is famous for its vibrant art scene, especially pottery. It became a hub for Egyptian pottery thanks to the Swiss potter Evelyne Porret, who established a pottery school here in the 1980s.

    • Activities: Visitors can explore various pottery workshops, where local artisans handcraft unique ceramic pieces. You can also attend pottery-making classes and buy handmade crafts as souvenirs.

    • Scenery: Tunis Village is nestled in a beautiful setting, with views of Qarun Lake and the surrounding desert landscapes, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and artistic inspiration.

    Meals: Lunch, Dinner

  • al fayoum, al fayoum

    Highlights of today include:

    1. Wadi El Rayan – Visit the Waterfall

    • Wadi El Rayan is a nature reserve famous for its stunning waterfalls, the only waterfalls in Egypt. It's a beautiful area with two main lakes connected by cascading water. The sight of the waterfalls amid the desert landscape makes it a popular spot for photography, nature walks, and relaxation. Visitors can enjoy the serene surroundings, go bird-watching, or take a boat ride on the lakes.

    2. Modawara Mountain – Photography

    • Modawara Mountain is a small but picturesque mountain located near Wadi El Rayan. Its unique shape and surrounding landscape make it a favorite for photographers, especially during sunrise or sunset. The golden desert sands, distant lakes, and rugged terrain provide an ideal backdrop for scenic photos. Hiking to the top offers panoramic views of the area, including the lakes and sand dunes.

    3. Wadi El Hitan – Visit the Fossil Site & Museum

    • Wadi El Hitan (Valley of the Whales) is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich fossil beds, showcasing early forms of whales that lived over 40 million years ago. The fossils reveal the evolution of whales from land-based animals to sea creatures. The Wadi El Hitan Fossil and Climate Change Museum provides additional insight into the significance of these fossils and the environmental history of the region. The site is well-preserved, with marked walking paths that guide visitors through the fossils in their natural setting.

    4. Magic Lake

    • Magic Lake is a pristine, secluded lake surrounded by desert dunes. It gets its name from the way its color changes throughout the day due to varying levels of sunlight. It’s a peaceful spot for relaxation, swimming, and a BBQ lunch by the lake, where you can enjoy local food while taking in the tranquil desert atmosphere.
