Starting our tour with a motor boat ride

Our day begins with the motor boat ride.

The boat is important for the navigation we need in these parts of the Nile. We are moving through several narrow channels, encased by a wall of lush plant life either side that eventually opens up to reveal rocky outcrops and agricultural practices. We pass local farmers in their small canoes going about their day, maybe checking their cattle.

Sailing allows us to take in the stunning views of the Nile.

Farming, local villages and endless sand dunes dominates one side while the opposite side is alive with people going about their daily lives in the city of Aswan. Many are working right on the river. It’s also here that the big river boats embark on a Nile Cruise, taking hundreds of travellers up the river to the East and West Bank of Luxor. Along the way, stops to see all the iconic ancient Egypt attractions include Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo and more.

There is certainly many great reasons to do a Nile Cruise with an average of 3 nights form Aswan to Luxor.

As we cruise further up the river, local boats come to meet us, hoping to sell whatever it is they have to offer. It’s a easy and polite “no thanks’ and they go back on their way.

We start to spot many of the local people down at the waters edge along sandy stretches. Families are enjoying the sun and young children are happily frolicking in the water. It’s a hot day, around 40 degrees, and we can’t help but feel a wee bit jealous. This is very typical in the south during Egypt summer time, but the breeze is simply divine.

It’s at that moment we stop the boat and pull up on our own private stretch of sand. Clothes and all, people are jumping in the water, feeling instantly relieved from the midday heat. I love that we get to change the narrative of the tour and do something spontaneous and in the moment. We spend a good hour or so swimming in the Nile and it’s great spirits from everyone.

Back on board, the motorboat navigates the stronger currents that are coming up, before approaching the Nubian village.

This is what touring should be about.! Having time up your sleeve to pivot and just go with the flow. This is what we pride ourselves on at Absolute Egypt Tours, a truly authentic and more enriching experience for your guests.

Arrival at the Nubian Villages

Upon arriving at the Nubian village, located on Elephantine Island, we were greeted by a riot of colours. The houses and buildings are all painted in bright blues, yellows, and pinks, each adorned with intricate patterns and symbols. The villagers welcome us warmly, their hospitality evident in their broad smiles and open arms. The Nubian people are known for their friendliness and their eagerness to share their culture with visitors.

Exploring the Culture and Traditions

The tour began with a walk through the village, where we observe daily life unfolding. Children play in the streets while the men are engaged in lively discussions while manning their open shop fronts.

The local artisans and shop keepers are about their work , plus the sights and smells of fresh spices that fill the air. We are told that during the evening no one locks their shops, as the Nubians are very community minded and look out for each other.

One of the highlights was learning about Nubian traditions and how they differ from those of the broader Egyptian communities.

Nubians have distinct customs, music, and dance, often characterized by their vibrant rhythms and colorful attire. The architecture, with its unique domed houses is designed to keep cool in the desert heat. Interestingly, many Nubian homes have no traditional floors; instead, they use sand, which is brushed every night. This practice helps the villagers detect if anything, such as scorpions or snakes have entered the house overnight.

Nubian Hospitality

During our visit, we enjoy some small traditional snacks with local dates and tasty hibiscus tea, a staple in Nubian hospitality. Some of the guests are receiving henna tattoos from the local women while the younger children look on with interest.

It’s a final goodbye to the Nubian folk, as we are on our way to our hotel located on an island in the middle of the Nile. We are all looking forward to a chilled out finish to the day.

Sailing a Felucca back to our hotel

On the way home, we change our motor boat to a felucca and continue the journey up the mighty Nile. The wind is on our side, allowing us to drift slowly. It’s the perfect pace to the relaxed mood everyone is feeling.

These traditional wooden sailing boats are a way of life here and a long tradition. The river is really alive but also as peaceful as possible. It is certainly a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Cairo.
