CAIRO ATTRACTIONS

Pyramids of Giza & Great Sphinx

Absolute Egypt tour leader Mel stands in front of the Pyramids of Giza

The amazing Pyramids of Giza

The Pyramids of Giza are without doubt one of the world’s most famous landmarks. They are not only one of the oldest but the only one to remain closely in tact.

It is believed the Pyramids consist of over 2 million blocks, and took some 20 years and 100,000 men to build. The largest pyramid, known as the Great Pyramid, was constructed around 4,500 years ago and stands over 450 feet tall, making it the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. Despite centuries of research, it remains a mystery as to how the ancient Egyptians transported and lifted the massive stone blocks to construct the pyramids.

To stand in front of a thousands of years old wonder and think about the history that surrounds the iconic site is simply mind blowing.

The Great Sphinx which also resides at the complex is a legendary symbol of ancient Egypt. It has the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh, and stands tall guarding the Giza Plateau.

Grand Egyptian Museum

Statue of Ramses II at Grand Egyptian Museum

The world patiently awaits for the announcement of the upcoming Grand Egyptian Museum, also known as the GEM.

Twenty years in the making, this impressive architectural marvel will house over 100,000 artifacts, including the legendary Tutankhamun collection. It will also be the largest museum in the world dedicated to one civilization.

With initial works beginning in 2005 after a world wide design competition (won by a Dublin firm), the museum has unfortunately seen many setbacks but promises to be worth the wait.

Located only a stones throw form the Great Pyramids of Giza, the GEM boasts state-of-the-art facilities and exhibition spaces, including a 30 foot & 80 ton statue of King Ramses II in the Grand hall. At present, visitors can only access the Grand Hall, commercial area, and exterior gardens. Entry is limited to advance bookings.

At present, a visit to the Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo and National Museum of Civilization to see the Royal Mummies is a great option.

Time to allow: 2 hours to a full day

Step Pyramids - Sakkara

Sakkara Step Pyramid

Sakkara (Saqqara) is located on the outskirts of Cairo and is a captivating historical site that holds profound significance. Known as the burial ground of ancient Memphis, Sakkara is a vast necropolis brimming with awe-inspiring archaeological wonders.
It is here you will see the Step Pyramid of Djoser which dates back over 4,600 years and is the world's oldest freestanding stone pyramid.

Beyond the Step Pyramid, Sakkara offers a chance to see various tombs and burial sites. The site boasts numerous mastabas, flat-roofed and rectangular-shaped tombs that housed the remains of nobles and high-ranking officials. Among these, the Tomb of Ti and the Tomb of Mereruka are particularly noteworthy, adorned with stunning murals and intricate carvings that depict scenes from daily life in ancient Egypt.

A visit to Sakkara is simply fascinating and as it is less famous than the Pyramids of Giza, tourists numbers are much lower. It is considered one of my favourite places to visit in Egypt away from the crowds giving you a chance to explore at your leisure.

Go to Sakkara Pyramids to find out more.

Time to allow: 2 to 3 hours

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization with Mummies Hall

The National Museum of Civilization is dedicated to a time line that covers ancient times to modern day society. Inaugurated in April2021, visitors can expect a range of artifacts, exhibits and multimedia displays.

The main exhibition hall is a wonderful look at Egypt through time. From the prehistoric era, to Greco-Roman times, and Coptic and Islamic times right up to Egypt as we know it today. Other collections include the Egyptian Textile Hall and Dye House.

The prize collection not to be missed is the Royal Mummies Hall. Included in the entry ticket, visitors will be taken aback by the collection of 18 Kings and 2 Queens. The space is dedicated to unveiling each mummy one by one as if walking through the Valley of the Kings.

Coptic Cairo and Cave Church

Cave church in Cairo shows seating under the roof of a cave

Coptic Cairo, also known as Old Cairo is a neighborhood brimming with rich history. Based on Egypt’s Coptic Christian heritage, this iconic district is home to the renowned Hanging Church, or Saint Virgin Mary's Church with its unique suspended position and intricate Coptic artwork. Visitors should cover their shoulders and legs in order to step inside for a look. Once inside, you’ll find intricate artwork, as well as woodwork and interesting architecture.

Other places of interest in the neighbourhood include the Coptic Museum and Ben Ezra Synagogue, which is also believed to be the place where baby Moses was found. The area is a must for cultural and history enthusiasts.

Another interesting place to see is the Cave Church. Though not in the same area, the location is quite remarkable as it is carved into the side of a cliff wall and well worth a look. The church is one of the largest churches not only in Egypt but also in the Middle East. It is located in an area known as the Zabbaleen city, meaning literally ‘garbage city’. This city has the largest population of garbage collectors and recyclers in Cairo.

The Cave Church is included in all of our Egypt Group Tours which is rarely visited by other tour companies.

Dating back to the 2nd century AD, the catacombs were discovered in 1900, when a donkey accidentally stumbled into a concealed shaft hidden beneath a mound of earth. Upon descending into the catacombs via a circular staircase, visitors are met by a vast network of intricately carved tunnels. The walls are adorned with stunning frescoes and intricate reliefs, depicting both mythological scenes and everyday life. River Nile Cruise

A Nile Cruise is one of the best ways to see Egypt

A Nile River Cruise is undoubtedly one the best things to do for anyone who wants to explore Egypt.

Cruises generally start from 2 locations.

Aswan to Luxor - 3 night cruise

During the cruise, guest will have the opportunity to disembark to some of the most famous Egypt attractions including Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor Temples, as well as Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples.

Your cruise promises an unforgettable journey as you marvel at the breathtaking landscapes and lush greenery along the way. Most cruises will offer a full board basis and have a bar, shopping and sundeck with pool. One of the highlights from my own experience is the nightly sunsets over the Nile and surrounding desert. Dependent on time of year, you may witness a deep orange to red sky or my personal favourite, a deep pinky red sunset.

A Nile Cruise is best paired with other Egypt highlights such as Pyramids, Red Sea and Alexandria’s attractions on the Mediterranean. You can read more here: 10 reasons you’ll love a Nile River Cruise.

Valley of the Kings

Inside a tomb at vally of the Kings shows a staircase heading downward with paintings adorning the walls

Valley of the Kings is a must see attraction in Egypt

One of Egypt’s most prized archaeological sites is without doubt, the Valley of the Kings.

Located on the west bank of the Nile River neat the city of Luxor, this ancient burial ground served as the final resting place for pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom era. Spanning over 500 years, from the 16th to the 11th century BCE, it contains around 63 tombs, including Tutankhamun's famous tomb. These tombs were carved into the rock and adorned with intricate paintings and hieroglyphics. Discovered in the 18th century, the Valley of the Kings remains a significant archaeological site, giving us valuable insights into the ancient Egyptian burial customs and beliefs.

Among the most popular tombs in this renowned archaeological site are those of Tutankhamun, where his famous burial mask still resides. An additional entry fee is required. Ramses II is a stunning tomb made famous by the ruler off 66 years, quite an impressive feat at the time. Lastly, Seti I which is commonly known as being the most the magnificence in terms of vibrant paintings. Seti I is another tomb that requires an additional fee.

Hatshepsut Temple

Hatshepsut Temple on the West bank of Luxor

Located on the East Bank near Luxor, the remarkable Hatshepsut Temple is quite like nothing else among Egypt’s famous temples. Built during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut in the 15th century BC and dedicated to the sun god, Amun-Ra, the temple’s backdrop of towering cliffs makes for an impressive sight.

Queen Hatshepsut was a unique and trailblazing figure in ancient Egypt. As a female ruler, she defied societal norms and broke through the gender barrier, ascending to the throne and ruling Egypt effectively for over two decades. Her reign symbolized female empowerment and challenged traditional gender roles, setting an inspiring precedent for future generations of female leaders.

Karnak Temple

The colossal columns of Karnak Temple

Built over more than a thousand years by generations of Pharaohs, the extraordinary Karnak Temple is quite simple “colossal”. Karnak is a spectacular complex of sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons and obelisks. Simply put, everything here is on a gigantic scale.

Highlights include the great “Hypostyle Hall” , an incredible forest of 134 gigantic pillars. The beautifully preserved hieroglyphics and the intricate details are quite astonishing so be sure look up as you pass through the many pillars. You will also see the Avenue of Sphinxes which leads to the entrance of the temple.

A nightly sound and light show can be viewed at an additional cost, lastly approximately 45 minutes.

Overall, Karnak is one of my favourite temples and is well worth a visit.

Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple at dusk

The astounding Luxor Temple sits in a convenient location in the heart of Luxor, making getting to it relatively easy on foot.

As you approach the temple, the monumental statues of a seated Ramses II immediately command ones attention. The grandeur of the entrance is visually eye catching and enticing you to want to explore what’s inside the great temple.
Inside the Great Hypostyle Hall you’ll find soaring columns and intricately detailed carvings, as sunlight gently filters through the carefully positioned openings.
Venturing further within the temple, you’ll encounter the inner sanctuaries and adorning walls of hieroglyphics that make this place so magical.

My favourite time to visit is most definitely during dusk when the entrance walls are dimly lit up, creating a spectacular and surreal feel that washes over you. The feeling in quite indescribable, as it you have suddenly been transported back in time.

Hot Air Balloon over Valley of the Kings

Hot air balloons over Luxor and Valley of the Kings

Embark on an early morning hot air balloon flight from Luxor, taking you over the dramatic landscape of Valley of the Kings.

The dawn adventure sees hundreds of tourists take to the skies to see the West Bank of Luxor from above. Watch as the sun unveils Luxor's awe-inspiring wonders, one by one. You’ll float above the waters of the Nile River and soar past iconic temples including the Valley of the Kings.

Having done this wonderful Egypt attraction, it is worth mentioning that not all tour companies are the same, so be sure to pick a reputable one for your buckerlist experience. While some hot air balloons will cover a good distance, others seemingly just halt once in the sky and don’t move that far. In other words, dont’ just choose this Egypt activity based on price alone.

Dendera Temple

The intricate walls of Dendara Temple are an impressive sight

For those looking for one of the most well preserved temples away from the crowds, my top pick is Dendera Temple.

Around 90 km north of Luxor, visitors will be stunned at the remaining colours that bring life to this thousands of year old ancient temple. Containing the Temple of Hathor, which is dedicated to the goddess of love and beauty, the well-preserved structure and intricate carvings make a visit here well worth the effort.

There is a lot to admire here including ancient constellations depicted on the walls of the temple, the sacred crypts with intricately painted ceilings, and various mythological scenes. Plus you’ll see the mesmerizing hypostyle hall adorned with 18 massive columns, making Dendera Temple a big winner for history buffs.

The grandeur of Philae Temple complex is a true highlight for visitors to Aswan.

Jump aboard a motor boat for the short and scenic journey to Philae Temple. Located on the island of Agilkia, the temple is dedicated to the goddess Isis. The temple is a quite stunning to loo at with much to explore within the entire complex. Edfu & Kom Ombo

Hearing from our Egyptologist guide, Mohammed at Kom Ombo Temple

As part of a Nile Cruise, you will be able to visit the two temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo.

Edfu temple was built to honour Horus, the falcon god. One of the unique parts of this temple is how important the inscriptions are. Not only are they beautiful, but they provide a very crisp view into religion, temples, and life in ancient Egypt.

Kom Ombo Temple, a unique and somewhat uncommon double temple. One half of the temple is dedicated to the crocodile god, Sobek, who represents fertility. The other half is dedicated to the falcon god, Horus.

Felucca Sailing

A felucca sailing the Nile River shows green pastrues riverside and sand dunes in the background

One of my most favourite things to do in Egypt is sailing aboard a felucca on the Nile.

A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing vessel with a distinctive and elegant triangular sail. It has been solidly part of Egypt's history for centuries and dates back to ancient times when feluccas were used for trade and transportation along the Nile River.

There is something so serene about sailing along the tranquil waterways of the Nile, and Aswan is one of the best places to partake in this relaxing experience. See rich farmland and grazing animals along the waters edge before transforming into golden sand dunes in the distance.

Kitchener Island with it’s botanical gardens and the colourful Nubian villages are great places of interest and can included in your sailing adventure.

Abu Simbel

Egyptologist Tour Guide Aamen at the mighty Abu Simbel

Get ready to explore one of the most famous temples in all of Egypt.

Abu Simbel is a famous UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its colossal rock-cut temples and four gigantic statues of Ramses II. Holding a commanding position in front of the temple, you will undoubtedly be awe-struck by their sheer presence. Built by Ramses II, these iconic structures stand as a testament to ancient Egyptian civilization, attracting visitors worldwide with their impressive architecture and rich historical significance. The two colossal temples greeting visitors are dedicated to Pharaoh himself and his beloved wife, Queen Nefertari.

Located deep in the southern part of Egypt, this significant archaeological site was relocated during the 1960s to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser and the newly constructed High Dam. This monumental challenge of cutting and moving each piece took some 5 years to complete and ensured the preservation of one of Egypt’s most prized archeological sites.

Abu Simbel is one of the best day trips while in Egypt. Visitors will usually take a coach from Aswan, though flights are also offered in and out. Due to it’s isolated and most southern location in Egypt, visitors will usually depart early morning long before the sun comes up to avoid the excessive heat that is common in this part of Egypt.

Time to allow: half to full day.

5 divers in deep blue water in the Red Sea

Australian Tour Leader Mina on a diving expedition in the Red Sea

There are not many places that can attest to being rated as one the best dive sites in the world. The Red Sea well and truly holds this title.

The warm tropical waters are home to some of the most beautiful soft and hard coral formations as well as marine life you could ever witness. Divers are attracted from all around the world seeking out adventure in an underwater paradise. Many choose to spend time on “liveaboard” boats that cruise the seas moving to different spots each day.

Some of the top rated dive sites include Thistlegorm Wreck in Ras Mohammed Marine Park, the Blue Hole in Dahab and Elphinstone Reef near Marsa Alam.

For snorkel enthusiasts, much of the coastline of the Red Sea is beckoning to be explored. With parts of the coast being fringed with reef, it is quite easy to get into the water from your beach side resort. These reefs are accessed by pontoons and piers that jut out to the deeper water from the beach. or why not jump on a boat trip out to Tiran Island (from Sharm El Sheikh) or various locations from Hurghada the perfect day out.

Other popular water activities on the Red Sea include parasailing, tubing and wind surfing. Dahab is one of the best locations due to the ideal wind conditions it receives throughout the year.

For those who are not as keen to get in the water, you can take sailing trips, sunset cruises and glass bottom boat rides without getting wet.

Mount Sinai - Sinai Peninsula

Australian Tour Leader, Mel at the top of Mount Sinai

When it comes to unique travel experiences in Egypt, there is nothing more majestic and exhilarating than making the trek up Mount Sinai. It is known as the mountain where Moses was given the ten commandments.

Having taken on the mountain on two of my previous trips to Egypt, I can happily testify that that this is a mind blowing adventure.

Guests will be picked up from near by resorts on the Red Sea such as Sharm El Sheikh, Taba and Dahab early evening for the drive through the desert to the base of the mountain.

The track winds its way slowly to the peak of Mount Sinai under the cover of darkness, with only the moon illuminating the surrounding mountains. Once you reach the summit it’s a short wait for the early morning sunrise. This jaw dropping moment is not only surreal, but magnificently beautiful.

Significant and sacred, climbing Mount Sinai is on the top of my list as one of the best things to do in Egypt.

Blue Hole - Dahab

looking down at the famous Blue Hole shows a reef off the beach and a huge deep blue hole

The intimidation Blue Hole in Dahab

Dahab is home to the  infamous Blue Hole. This 100 meter deep submarine sinkhole attracts recreational divers all year round. Its sheer vertical drop is overwhelmingly intimidating to say the least, plus being known as the most dangerous dive site in the world certainly doesn’t give out any comfort signals. But that doesn’t seem to stop adrenaline seeking divers from taking the plunge.

With snorkeling being a less intimidating option, my experience of swimming and snorkeling here was quite awesome. You can access the Blue Hole directly from the beach which makes it extremely bazaar, yet exciting. For those staying in the near by city of Sharm El Sheikh, tours here are run regularly.

Coloured Canyon - Sinai Peninsula

Coloured Canyon in Egypt shows a reddish rock either side of the canyon walls

The everchanging red rocks of Coloured Canyon

One of my favourite places on the Sinai Peninsula is Coloured Canyon. You’ll traverse over 800 meters through the canyon, capturing the ever changing colors of the rock wall within. Carved by centuries of erosion, the canyon is a maze of narrow passages and towering rock formations. As sunlight filters through the narrow gaps, the colors intensify, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Visitors must manoeuvre around rocks and through tight crevices to access the canyon, making it an exciting and adventurous attraction.

This magical place is located in South Sinai near the town of Nuweiba.  A natural wonder , the canyon is both striking in color and contrast and I highly recommend pursuing this fantastic Egypt experience.

Visitors can take a tour to the Colored Canyon from Dahab or Sharm El Sheikh.

White Desert National Park

A landscape of chalky white rocks scattered across the desert floor with mushroom shaped formations

The lunar looking White Desert

Located between the cities of Cairo and Luxor, the White Desert National Park is not seen by many tourists due to it being away from the main tourist route. But don’t let that deter you if you have the time.

You’ll feel completely isolated and at peace during your time in the White Desert. During my visit here overnight, I was totally captivated by the lunar landscape, made even better at sunset.

Camping in Egypt's White Desert is by far the best way to experience it in all its glory. Offering an amazing experience, you’ll be immersed in a surreal landscape of chalky white rock formations. It’s like nothing else you’ve seen I’m sure. As the sun sets, the desert transforms into a magical scene filled with breathtaking silhouettes and clear starry nights away from any city pollution.

The White Desert is best accessed from Cairo and if camping, requires 2 days to fully immerse yourself into the unique attraction.

As you can see, Egypt is home to a diverse amount of interesting places and amazing things to see and do.

A blend of temples, tombs, Nile River and Red Sea attractions makes for a complete holiday to this mystical land. I highly recommend taking a 2 week tour of Egypt in order to fully soak up every ounce of charm and wonder.

For those with more time a tour why not join our Treasure of Egypt and Jordan Tour. This 3 week tour with your Australian Guide promises to show you as much as possible at a comfortable pace.

For those who prefer to go it alone by yourself or with friends and family, a private tour is a good option too.

However you decide to see Egypt, it is sure to be your most epic adventure yet!
