The sunrises and sunsets in Egypt are truly a spectacular sight, painting the skies with a mesmerizing array of colors. Whether casting light in the serene surroundings of the Red Sea coast or against a golden desert backdrop, there is nothing more magical than an Egypt sunset or sunrise.
The famous Egyptian Temples and iconic Great Pyramids of Giza are not without their own captivating moments, as is the Upper Egypt cities of Luxor and Aswan.
Finally, the Nile River might just be the most incredible place to witness a sunrise and sunset, but I’ll let you be the judge of that in a series of photos throughout this article.

Desert Sunrise - near Abu Simbel
There is something incredibly wonderful about seeing the first light of day break on the desert horizon. This never ending arid landscape becomes fully exposed as the sun peaks from a distance.
For those lucky enough to pay a visit to Abu Simbel, located in the far south of Egypt, this desert sunrise is a true highlight. Many group tours depart well in the early hours when it’s still dark outside, especially during the warmer months. That’s because it can top anywhere between 40 to 50 degrees Celsius during the hottest times of year. By the time the sun rises, you’ll be literally in the middle of nowhere.
The sky turns a bright tinge of orange right before the sun rises, giving you some indication to get your cameras ready. It looks absolutely gigantic and appears like it could burst into flames any minute. The deep orange and red hue draws a line of onlookers who have departed the bus to get a better look. What a moment!

Mount Sinai Sunrise - Sinai Peninsula
The words “this is the most beautiful sunrise on earth” is probably what you’ll be thinking when on top of Mount Sinai. The addition of a of a 7 km hike to the summit only makes it more extreme, and incredibly rewarding.
Mount Sinai is located within the Sinai Peninsula, and is best accessed via an organised tour from the popular Red Sea Resorts of Sharm El Sheik and Dahab. Hundred of ordinary everyday people make the trek through darkness each and every night. They’re on a mission to walk in the footstep of Moses, but to also see sunrise, but must first tackle the mountain in order to lay witness to one of the greatest shows in Egypt.
This sunrise is particularly extraordinary, producing layer upon layer of mountain silhouettes. It’s the moment you really get a look at the Sinai mountains in all their majestic glory. It’s a quiet and peaceful moment, a time to reflect and a time to celebrate.

Red Sea Sunrise
A sunrise over water is always considered a special location, and the Red Sea in Egypt captures the sunrise brilliantly. With calm tranquil waters, the stillness all round simply washes over the soul.
The prime east facing locations of Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam and Dahab are all dotted along the Red Sea. Holiday makers flock in their droves for some seaside action in a place that enjoys sunshine all year round. But not everyone gets to wake up and hit the sands in order to see the sun welcome the day.
To enjoy a sunrise in Egypt, the Red Sea is a must.

Sunset over the Nile River
If there was ever moment to capture a stunning Egypt sunset, it is without question over the beauty of the Nile River. For those lucky enough to be on a Nile Cruise or a Felucca on the Nile, the changing colours of sunset will blow you mind.
I have seen my fair share on sunsets in Egypt, but my mind keeps taking me back to the Nile and its mesmerizing vivid pink and red skies. From our riverboat that gently glides along one of the world’s most famous waterways, it’s the pinnacle of another incredible day in Egypt. A Nile River Cruise generally is between the two cities of Aswan and Luxor and last 3 to 4 nights.
While every sunset is determined by changing factors such as time of day and air temperatures, one particular sunset in Egypt came on a hot August night in the city of Aswan. Of course, it was while cruising the Nile. I have never seen a sky so incredibly red in the heart of such an iconic location that is the Nile River.

Sunset at Luxor Temple
Located on the east bank of the Nile River, Luxor is renowned for its ancient monuments and rich history. The city is home to famous Egypt attractions such Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor Temple, as well as many glorious sunsets. The best time to visit Egypt is from October to March when the weather is mild and perfect for exploring the outdoor attractions.
A great time to visit Luxor Temple is at dusk is when the combination of the sun setting and the Temple’s outer walls being illuminated come together for an epic experience.
Be sure to head riverside too where various boats on the water and the palms trees on the outer banks create more magical moments.

Sunset at Pyramids of Giza
There is nothing more famous than the Great Pyramids of Giza. It is the gateway to the mysteries of an ancient land, and visited by millions every year.
This Egyptian treasure has long fascinated the world, capturing the hearts of everyone who lays eyes upon on it for the first time. While i have personally seen the Pyramids on over 15 occasions, a sunset visit when the gates have closed for the day is a special time. The many hotels in the area have a particularly good vantage point from their roof tops, especially those in front of the Great Sphinx gate.
If you are in just the right position, the sun will set directly behind the Great Pyramid while the Sphinx stands guarding the entire plateau. It’s a shot so iconic, you’ll be left speechless.

White Desert Sunset
The White Desert is truly spectacular and is characterized by its chalk-white rock formations. Located in the Western Desert, you’ll experience a surreal panorama adorned with unique limestone sculptures that have been carved over centuries by the wind and sand, creating an ethereal, lunar-like environment.
Camping in the White Desert is the perfect way to experience the lunar -like landscape well after sunset. As night falls, the stark white rocks take on an eerie glow under the moonlight, casting surreal shadows across the desert floor. You will also see a star-studded sky in this remote and captivating location.
Camping in the White Desert was an incredible experience for me, and I loved the solitude along with the magical sunset.
